Know your instruments frequency range.
Frequency barn gate everything, this means high and low pass with a 24 db and up cut on every sound, whether your using a synth or you've got one of our session musicians to put a line down on your track, knowing the correct freq's to capture the key.

Applying the right amount of push and pull.
Every sound has a sweet spot. finding the right part can happen by accident but knowing you've got it right can only be told with a good, trusted pair of speakers. harsh areas to be thinking about is 6-8k (the ess zone) this area can hurt so be careful you don't want to give your audience any pain, but don't take it all away, otherwise you risk losing your transience and crack from the sound. and that'll be bad. Also be aware of the mud zone, the 200-300's, most sounds will need a little bit of this area but you can have to much so balence is key. Saying all of this, you still need to be creative because rules where made to be broken, try new things, cut here, push there and see what fits for your sound, and hopfully it'll comes fast have fun automating.

Creative uses for all EQ's.
Challenge everything, nothing ventured is nothing gained, so setup some perpetrators to automate and tweak, Everyone fade sound in and out, but that can feel robotic, maybe try low passing (top cutting) the sound relay low to help introduce it and creep the sound in.
